What Is The Best Octordle Score? Here’s How Octordle Scoring System Works

Octordle scores are displayed at the end of the game using emojis and a numeric score for the entire game.

These numeric scores are shown per board, along with an overall total score, as illustrated below.

Let’s focus on the numeric scores—what do they represent, and what is considered a good score, or rather, the best Octordle scores?

As you can see, there are individual board scores and an overall score. The overall score is simply the sum of the board scores.

Each board score ranges from 1 to 14, depending on how many guesses it took to find the correct word. For example, if you see 6️⃣, it means it took you 6 guesses to solve that board. A 🔟 indicates that it took 10 guesses to find the correct word. 13 means that it took you 13 guesses to find the right word in the board and 14 means that you missed the word.

From this, you’ll quickly realize that lower scores are better, particularly in the Daily and Sequence Games. A lower score means you were able to find the correct words with fewer guesses.

What is a good Octordle score?

Let’s start with the worst score.

The worst possible score in Octordle means you’ve missed all the words, failing to guess any correctly.

When this happens, a score of 14 is typically assigned to each missed word. Since there are 8 boards, the total score would be 14 x 8 = 112, which represents the worst score you can achieve.

Now, a “good” score would be something lower than 112. If we take half of the worst score, we get 112 / 2 = 56.

However, since lower scores are better in Octordle, we can deduce that a good score would be closer to 50 or even lower.

A score below 50 generally reflects strong performance, as it means you solved most boards with fewer guesses.

What Is The Best Octordle Score?

The best possible Octordle score means you’ve guessed all the answers on the first attempt for each board.

While this is nearly impossible unless you’ve cheated or used hints (which, for the sake of this explanation, we’ll set aside), here’s how the scoring works:

In Octordle, especially in the Daily and Sequence Games, if you guess all the words correctly on the first attempt, your scores for each board would look like this:

WordScore
1st1
2nd2
3rd3
4th4
5th5
6th6
7th7
8th8

When you sum these up, the total score is 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 = 36.

So, the best possible Octordle score is 36!

What Does The Clock Mean In Octordle?

In Octordle, clocks are used to represent scores higher than 10, specifically for guesses made within 11, 12, or 13 attempts.

This happens because there are no specific emojis for these numbers, so a clock is used instead to display the following:

  • 11 o’clock = 11 guesses
  • 12 o’clock = 12 guesses
  • 1 o’clock (13 on a 24-hour clock) = 13 guesses

Aside from the lack of emoji options, clocks are also used because they symbolize time pressure. The 11th, 12th, and 13th guesses are the final ones you have, indicating that you’re running out of time.

In terms of numerical scores:

  • 11 o’clock = 11
  • 12 o’clock = 12
  • 1 o’clock = 13

Hopefully, you now have a clearer understanding of how you’ve fared when achieving an overall score of something like 48 versus something 63.

One final point worth noting about the Octordle scoring system is that the numeric score is designed not to heavily penalize missed words. Instead, it focuses more on rewarding earlier guesses (fewer attempts) rather than punishing missed words.

According to Octordle, the numeric score is meant to reflect overall performance, providing a way to see how efficiently a player used their guesses throughout the game.
