Stackdown is an engaging daily game by Waffle Studio that requires you to find six 5-letter words from a collapsing stack of letter tiles. You can only form one word at a time. Since it’s a daily game, once you finish the puzzle, you’ll need to wait until the next day to access a new one.

How It Works
Playing Stackdown is pretty straightforward. Your main goal is to clear the stack of tiles by finding six 5-letter words, one at a time. You must complete each word before moving on to the next.
When you start the game, you’ll see a stack of letter tiles, with only four tiles exposed at first. You can tap only these exposed letters to build a five-letter word. Tapping a letter moves it into the word slots below, where you form a valid word, and doing so also exposes more letters in the stack.
You continue this process until you’ve found all six valid words for the day. If the letters you’ve selected don’t form a valid or sensible word, you can tap them again in the word slots to send them back to the stack. In some cases, tiles move back automatically, especially if you attempt to submit an invalid word, which is just part of how the puzzle is designed to work.
If you get stumped and need some help, the game includes a hint feature that you can swipe to reveal. The hint is designed to guide you toward discovering the correct word. If you still can’t find a word that matches the hint, you can enter the hint into the search bar on our site to find the answer. That’s it.
Behind-the-Scenes Timer
To help you compare your gameplay skills with friends or other players, Stackdown includes a behind-the-scenes timer that tracks how long it takes you to find each of the six words. I call it “behind the scenes” because it isn’t shown during gameplay, which keeps the experience more relaxed and smooth.
The timer starts as soon as the game loads in your browser and automatically pauses whenever you’re not actively playing, such as when you open a menu or a popup within the game interface.
It’s also worth noting that the timer does not affect your star score. Your star score is based solely on the number of hints you use while playing.
Statistics
Once you finish the game, you’re shown your statistics, including a timecard for that day’s puzzle and your best time across all games you’ve played so far. This helps you see how you performed and track your progress over time.
Settings
Like other word games, Stackdown includes a few settings to enhance your gameplay experience. As of the time of writing this post, there are two main options: Show Time and Dark Mode.
- Show Time: You can choose to display the timer mentioned earlier or keep it running behind the scenes by default.
- Dark Mode: This allows you to switch from the default day mode to night mode, which can be easier on the eyes for some people or provide better contrast if you prefer the darker interface.
