Alphadots Game: How it Works & How to Solve it Fast

Alphadots is Bloomberg’s daily word puzzle game, launched in late September 2025. It challenges players to combine a cryptic clue (usually shown at the top of the game) and a chart that plots letters by their alphabet position (A at the top, Z at the bottom) to uncover the day’s word or phrase.

How to Solve Alphadots

There isn’t any secret or complex strategy needed to solve Alphadots. All you have to do is read the dots in the chart from left to right as sequential letters in the answer phrase. Dots higher up represent earlier letters in the alphabet, while dots lower down represent later ones. From there, it’s simply a matter of using your intuition to judge where each letter is likely to fall on the chart. That’s it.

Perhaps I can share my go-to way of figuring out letter positions and solving the puzzle. I play the game every day and share the answers here for anyone who gets stuck. Here are my strategies:

1. Keep The Day’s Clue in Mind

Each Alphadots game displays a clue at the top. This clue is not the definition of the word or phrase, so don’t try to Google it, look for synonyms, or force a phrase that directly matches the clue. That approach won’t help.

Instead, think of the clue as a loose guide meant to steer your thinking as you connect the dots and work out the answer yourself. For example, one demo clue is “liquid asset?” and the answer is oil. The clue doesn’t define oil—it simply nudges your thinking in the right direction.

Another clue, which appeared on December 19, 2025, was “Person whose itinerary is up in the air?” The answer was FREQUENT FLYER. Again, the clue isn’t the meaning of the phrase, but it points you toward the correct idea.

Always keep this in mind when guessing the answer or trying to place the letters correctly. The clue is there to guide your thinking, not give the solution away.

2. Imaginary Scale

To figure out where a letter belongs, imagine its position along a scale. The scale shows the first letter (A) on one end and the last letter (Z) on the other, and it’s up to you to estimate where B, C, D, E, all the way to Y, fall in between.

After playing the game several times, I realized the scale is approximately 5.65 cm long. If you divide that by the 26 letters of the alphabet, you get roughly 0.2 cm per letter. In other words, that’s the estimated space between each letter.

If you really want to get precise, you can use a ruler and apply this spacing approximation directly to your computer screen to estimate where each letter should be. Alternatively, you can use the scale I’ve provided below. Open it in one browser window and the game in another, place them side by side, and you’ll be able to see where each letter lines up.

Yes, it’s a very manual method—and it might even seem a bit silly—but when you’re truly stuck, it can be surprisingly helpful.

3. Leverage the “plot a letter” hint

The game includes a “plot a letter” hint that lets you test the position of a letter on the chart or scale. This is one of the most useful clues for figuring out the word or phrase.

If your instincts suggest a certain letter—say G, H, or U—you can plot it to see if you’re right. Once plotted, you’ll be able to tell whether the dot lines up with that letter or sits slightly before or after it, which often means it’s the previous or next letter in the alphabet.

When you plot a letter, the game also tells you whether that letter appears in the mystery word or phrase. I usually start with letters I suspect are repeated (these are letters that appear to be on the same line or close on a line), since identifying repeated letters makes the solution much easier.

That’s it when it comes to solving the Alphadots puzzle—it really is that simple and straightforward. I’ll update this post if I come across any other worthwhile strategies.
